Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – This Time In Croatia

Croatia Online - Vis

There are plenty of surprises in the new “Mamma Mia!” film. One of the things that surprised me most was how easily a Croatian island could be transformed into a Greek one! Yes, most of it is shot on the lovely Croatian island of Vis. There are two main towns in Vis – Vis, the “capital” and Komiža, the fishing village. A lot of the shooting is in Komiža but the whole island makes a very scenic and  convincing backdrop for the sequel, still focusing on life on a Greek island for Donna and her Dynamos, friends and relations.

The whole island is still largely unspoilt but that can surely not last much longer. Croatia has become increasingly popular as a holiday destination in recent years and has moved distinctly upmarket. Game of Thrones has increased the hype, Croatia’s World Cup run, to finish second, increased exposure yet more, and the shimmering success of “Mamma Mia!” has attracted equal attention to Croatia’s shimmering coastline.

If you take a look at one of our older postings - Croatia Online - Vis Revisited – you will get an idea of how things were, and we were already predicting change back in 2007! To date, however, things haven’t changed that much though there are all sorts of plans on the drawing board.

It’s probably best not to ask for Ouzo though if you do visit – the islanders are rightly proud of their local wines and liqueurs!

Today’s picture is looking out to sea from the main, but small, harbour in Vis town.
